Extended Stay Rate Survey - December 2005

In October 2005, Biz-stay.com researchers conducted an extensive survey comparing the lowest available weekly discount rates in December at 9 leading extended stay hotel chains. The chains ranged from budget (Crossland) to upscale (Residence Inn). For extended stay chain abbreviations used in the rate matrix below, please refer to the following key (with average studio rates):

CL = Crossland (average rate: $29.68)

ESA = Extended StayAmerica (average rate: $48.59)

SP = StudioPLUS (average rate: $43.38)

HS = Homestead Studio Suites (average rate: $53.43)

CW = Candlewood Suites (average rate: $76.05)

TP = TownePlace Suites by Marriott (average rate: $87.89)

SB = Staybridge Suites (average rate: $105.53)

HW = Homewood Suites by Hilton (average rate: $116.67)

RI = Residence Inn by Marriott (average rate: $125.01)

To allow for a meaningful price comparison, we recorded the best available daily rates (based on a weekly stay) for studio suites at all hotels for the same time period - a stay from December 17 to December 24 2005. The studios in our rate survey all are one-room suites with fully-equipped kitchens, including (at a minimum) a refrigerator, sink, microwave and stovetop. For past rates, see our June 2005 Rate Survey or our December 2004 Rate Survey. Comparing the current rate survey with the survey conducted one year ago, we found significant variation across brands, with an increase of 15.3% at Candlewood Suites, and a decrease of 2.1% at Studio PLUS:

In all, we checked rates for 1,561 properties in 265 US market areas. (For rates in Canada, please see the Canadian Extended Stay Survey.) In many areas, there was more than one hotel of a particular brand. When these hotels charged different rates, we provide a price range. When there is no vacancy for the particular suite type, this is indicated by "nv".
